Ryanair is strict about cabin bags, so it’s fair to wonder whether that bottle of gin from the airport shop will cost you a gate fee. The good news: Ryanair’s own Help Centre says your duty-free bag containing duty-free items is allowed in the cabin along with your cabin bags. Here’s what that means in practice, and where travelers still get caught out.

    The quick answer

    • A duty-free shopping bag from the airport shop can come on board in addition to your normal Ryanair bag allowance.
    • Your normal bags still have to meet the rules. The free small bag must fit under the seat in front (40 x 30 x 20 cm). A larger cabin bag needs Priority and 2 Cabin Bags.
    • “Duty-free” means the shop’s bag with the shop’s receipt. A random tote of shopping from town is not a duty-free bag.

What counts as a duty-free bag

The allowance is for purchases from the airport shops after security, packed in the bag the shop gives you. Keep the receipt in the bag. If gate staff ask, a sealed shop bag with a receipt is much easier to explain than loose items in a carrier bag. Airport prices aren’t always lower than in town, so compare before you buy. It’s the same habit I use to avoid tourist traps at major attractions.

It’s sensible to keep the duty-free bag small. Ryanair’s Help Centre doesn’t publish a size for it, so a bag that’s clearly a full extra suitcase of shopping invites questions at the gate. One shop bag with a few items is the safe version.

    Your normal Ryanair cabin allowance

OptionWhat you can bring on board
Basic fareOne small bag that fits under the seat, 40 x 30 x 20 cm
Priority and 2 Cabin BagsThe small bag plus a 10 kg cabin bag up to 55 x 40 x 20 cm
Duty-freeYour duty-free shop bag, in addition to the above

If your small bag is too big at the gate, you’ll be asked to pay to put it in the hold, and gate fees cost much more than adding a bag online. Measure your bag at home with everything in it. To see how Ryanair compares, my carry-on size and weight limits for 25 airlines and the bag rules finder show cabin bag sizes side by side.

    Liquids, connections and customs

    Liquids from duty-free

Drinks and perfume bought after security are fine on your Ryanair flight. Where it gets tricky is a connection: if you have to go through security again, liquids over 100 ml can be confiscated unless they’re in a sealed, tamper-evident bag (often called a STEB) with the receipt visible. Ask the shop to seal it if you’re connecting.

Customs allowances are a separate rule

Ryanair’s bag rules decide what fits in the cabin. Customs rules decide how much alcohol and tobacco you can bring into the country you land in without paying duty. Within the EU there are no duty-free limits for personal use, but travelers arriving from outside the EU have allowances (for example 1 litre of spirits or 2 litres of fortified wine, 4 litres of wine, 16 litres of beer, and 200 cigarettes). The UK has its own limits. Check the customs authority of your destination if you’re buying a lot.

    Lithium batteries and electronics

If you buy a power bank or electronics at the airport, Ryanair’s rules apply as soon as you board. Power banks are limited to two per passenger, must not exceed 100 Wh, and must stay on your person or in the small bag under the seat, not in the overhead locker. They can’t be used to charge another power bank on board.

How to avoid a gate fee

    1. Pack your small bag so it fits the 40 x 30 x 20 cm sizer with a little room to spare.
    2. Keep duty-free purchases in the shop bag, with the receipt.
    3. Don’t move duty-free items into your small bag if that makes it bulge past the sizer.
    4. If you know you’ll shop a lot, add a cabin bag or checked bag online before the airport.

    Frequently asked questions

Does Ryanair measure the duty-free bag?

Ryanair’s Help Centre says the duty-free bag is allowed along with your cabin bags but doesn’t give a size for it. Keep it to one normal shop bag to avoid questions.

Can I put duty-free items in my small bag instead?

Yes, as long as the small bag still fits under the seat and in the sizer. A bulging small bag is the classic way to end up paying a gate fee.

Can I buy duty-free on a Ryanair flight?

Ryanair sells some items on board. Those purchases are handed to you in the cabin, so they don’t affect your bag allowance.

What if my connection is on another airline?

Each airline sets its own rules. Check the cabin bag policy for your next flight, and ask the shop to seal liquids in a tamper-evident bag if you’ll go through security again.

I'm Jessica Lawton, and I write and edit Travel Like a Boss. I started the site because most of my own trip planning ended in the same place: three tabs of government advisories, an airline policy written in legalese and a forum thread from 2014. I'm not a security consultant, a travel agent or a lawyer, and I don't claim to be. What I do is read the official sources, compare them with what travelers actually run into, and write it up in plain English. Where a guide is my own opinion, I say so.
