Flying American with a suit or a dress you don’t want crushed? You can bring a soft-sided garment bag on board, but it isn’t a free extra. On American, the garment bag takes the place of your regular carry-on, so plan your packing around that.

    The quick answer

    • Carry-on garment bag: soft-sided, no more than 51 inches (130 cm) in total dimensions (length + width + height).
    • It counts as your one carry-on item. You can still bring one personal item that fits under the seat, up to 18 x 14 x 8 inches (45 x 35 x 20 cm).
    • Checked garment bag: treated like any other checked bag, with the normal checked size, weight and fee rules for your ticket.

How to measure a garment bag the way the gate agent will

The 51-inch figure is a total, not a single side. Fold the bag the way you’ll carry it, zip it shut with everything inside, then measure the length, the width and the thickness at the fullest point. Add the three numbers together. A typical bi-fold garment bag holding one suit and a shirt or two comes in under the limit. A tri-fold stuffed with shoes usually doesn’t.

The bag also has to fit in the overhead bin or under the seat. Soft sides help here, because a garment bag can lie flat on top of other bags where a hard case can’t.

Garment bag plus a personal item: what fits

Because the garment bag is your carry-on, everything else in the cabin goes in your personal item. That’s a backpack, tote or laptop bag up to 18 x 14 x 8 inches. If you also need a rolling carry-on, you’ll have to check one of the two. For ideas on fitting a whole trip into less luggage, these carry-on only packing guides from travel bloggers are worth a read.

A few things don’t count toward your allowance on American: a diaper bag (one per child), a breast pump, a small cooler of breast milk, child safety seats, strollers, and medical or mobility devices.

    Regional flights and valet bags

On regional American Eagle aircraft, overhead space is small. If your carry-on is bigger than personal item size, American asks you to valet it at the gate: they tag it, load it, and hand it back on the jet bridge when you land. Before you hand over a garment bag this way, take out anything you can’t check, like power banks, spare batteries and e-cigarettes.

    Should you check it instead?

Checking a garment bag is fine if the bag is sturdy and you’re not connecting through a tight layover. Carry it on if:

    • You need the outfit the same day you land (a wedding, a meeting, an interview).
    • You have a connection, where a delayed bag is more likely.
    • The clothes are expensive or hard to replace.

If you do check it, choose a garment bag with a proper frame or a wheeled “garment duffel,” and put a name tag inside as well as outside.

Packing tips that keep a suit wearable

    1. Button the jacket and hang it on a slim hanger, then slip the trousers over the bar with a sheet of tissue between the folds.
    2. Put shoes in a separate bag at the bottom of the fold, soles facing away from the fabric.
    3. Board early if you can. A garment bag needs flat bin space, and that disappears fast on full flights.
    4. Hang it up the moment you arrive. A steamy bathroom shower takes out most travel creases in about 15 minutes.

    Other airlines are different

Garment bag rules are not standard. Some airlines treat a garment bag as an ordinary carry-on that has to meet the normal size limit, and some low-cost carriers charge for any bag bigger than a small under-seat item. Before a trip on another airline, compare the cabin limits in my carry-on size and weight limits for 25 airlines, or look up one airline in the bag rules finder.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I bring a garment bag and a rolling carry-on on American?

Not both in the cabin. The garment bag counts as your one carry-on item, so you’d bring the garment bag plus a personal item, and check the roller.

Does a hard-sided garment carrier count?

American’s garment bag allowance is for soft-sided garment bags. A hard case is treated like a regular carry-on and has to meet the 22 x 14 x 9 inch limit.

Is there a closet on board for my suit?

Some aircraft have a small closet, usually for premium cabin passengers. Don’t count on it in Economy. You can ask the crew politely, but plan to use the bin.

Does Basic Economy allow a garment bag?

Check your fare rules at booking. Basic Economy rules differ between airlines and change over time, so confirm on American’s site before you fly.

I'm Jessica Lawton, and I write and edit Travel Like a Boss. I started the site because most of my own trip planning ended in the same place: three tabs of government advisories, an airline policy written in legalese and a forum thread from 2014. I'm not a security consultant, a travel agent or a lawyer, and I don't claim to be. What I do is read the official sources, compare them with what travelers actually run into, and write it up in plain English. Where a guide is my own opinion, I say so.
